bq. Greetings fellow fish,

bq. This Saturday is the annual AHA Big Brew Day, which also coincides with our
monthly group brew. Homebrewers all across the world will be working off of
a similar set of recipes, brewing beers that will be tallied and posted by
the AHA. This year's recipe is a clone of Fullers Chiswick Bitter. This
beer was choosen because it was a favorite of the late, great beer champion
Michael Jackson.

bq. The brew will be at my new residence, 1983 NE Jackson Avenue, and we'll
start around 10:30AM. I will be unveiling my new brew system this weekend,
known as the Ark. Kris Cate and I spent a lot of time and money on this
work of art, and welcome all of you to come by and check it out. I will be
brewing up a batch of something strong and dark on the new system, but would
like someone to bring enough gear to brew a five gallon extract batch of the
Chiswicks Bitter. I already have the ingredients rounded up, and a healthy
yeast cake to dump the brew onto.

bq. This weekend's brew will also serve as our unofficial COHO de Mayo party.
We'll be making tacos with all the fixings, along with my ever popular queso
dip. We'll have the club's lime lager on tap, as well as keg of Silver
Moon's Snake Bite Porter.

bq. I'll forward a map in a separate email, to follow shortly. Hope to see
everyone on Saturday!

bq. Just wanted to give you a reminder that out monthly meeting is coming up this Wednesday, at 6:30PM, at the Brew Shop. We'll have a couple of different COHO beers to sample, Crystal Red Persausion and Chiswick's Bitter. I'm sure that the Food Committee will bring some tasty nibbles, but please bring some homebrews for everyone to sample, and some donations for the raffle. We have a few great leftovers from the Spring Fling to throw in to the raffle, so come on out and buy some tickets. We'll also have ribbons and paperwork from the Spring Fling, so track down one of the execs if you're looking for anything. Also, we'll have a quick round table about hop farming to see how everyone is doing with their rhizomes. I'll also update everyone about some upcoming events, hop madness and BBF included. Hope to see you all on Wednesday PM.

bq. Greetings fellow fish,

bq. We'll be having our monthly group brew this Sunday at Jerry O's beautiful residence on the south side of town. The brew will begin at 10:30AM. His address is 60301 Woodside Loop, 97702. "Here's a link to a map":http://www.mapquest.com/maps/60301+woodside+loop+bend+or+97702/

bq. We've dug a recipe out of the COHO archives, dating back to the first group brew we had at Jerry's house. We'll be seeing a return of the Big Beaver Pale Ale. Big Beaver is a refreshing American style pale, here's the specifics -

bq. 20 lbs American 2 row
2.5 lbs Crystal 60
1 lb Carapils
1oz Magnum @ 60
2oz Columbus @ 10
2oz Simcoe @ 0
American ale yeast

bq. OG should be around 1.050, with about 40 IBUs. This should be a great, easy drinking summer beer. Jerry says he might have a keg of IPA on tap by the time Sunday rolls around, but I encourage all of you to bring a couple of homebrews with you for sampling. I'd also encourage everyone to bring some chairs if they plan on sitting, as this seems to be a recurring problem at our brews. Jerry says he'll work on some chili, and I'll be bringing some queso dip. We hope to see everyone on Sunday - come on out, the weather should be great!

I just wanted to throw out a reminder to everyone that our monthly meeting is coming up this Wednesday evening, at the Brew Shop at 6:30PM. We'll have all of the usual club business to tend to, including our raffle, and some updated information about Hop Madness and our August group brew. We'll also hold a brief discussion about the possibility of putting on a SMASH formatted competition. SMASH stands for single malt and single hop brewing. I'm not sure what we're drinking this week, but there will be something good to imbibe, and possible some food from our food committee. I hope to see everyone on Wednesday.

A sober shuttle ride from McMenamins to Dylan’s house will be provided. (Thanks Dylan) Please make arrangements for a sober ride home or… Dylan has offered up his couches and floors for the night if you would rather not go home at all.

bq. Greetings fellow fish,

bq. Here's some info from Gary Wirt (please see below)for the upcoming group brew this weekend. The brew will be on Saturday (I think that's what I announced at the last meeting), starting at 10:30AM. We'll be bring some kind of Pilsner, most likely of the Bohemian or German variety, and be brewing on Tim Howe's all grain system. It looks like Gary has some great food lined up. The Wirt's have an awesome home and are extremely gracious hosts. Most likely I'll bring a keg of something - small beer? Imperial Red? Fresh Hop Stout? We'll see what the day brings. Hope to see everybody on Saturday!

Greetings fellow fish,

Our monthly group brew will take place this Saturday, at Evan and Cicely's house. We're going to try to get an early start with this one, around 9:30AM, as Evan has a few obligations later in the day. So come on out early and bring some coffee (porter)and dounts! There will be a keg of COHO beer on hand and plenty of all grain brewing fun to be had.

We'll be working on a special brewing project with a small, local brewery (to remain nameless) - brewing a pilot batch of beer using some unfamiliar Southern Hemisphere hops. It will be a single hopped, very basic American style pale ale, with the intention of learning as much as possible about the specific hop that we're brewing with. The brewery will be providing all of the ingredients, including a slurry of their house yeast strain. The only thing that the brewers have asked for is a couple of bottles from this batch so that they can get a good read on what they'll use these hops for on a professional scale. It should be a great experiment.

COHO will be having our monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 21st at The Brew Shop. We'll have all of our usual fun, including a raffle and a keg of COHO beer to sample from, but due to popular demand we'll be introducing an educational component to our meetings. Starting at 6:30PM, and running until 7PM, we'll cover a technical brewing topic. Our topic this month will be on various hopping techniques. Future topics will include yeast management, yeast harvesting, and grain, hops, and yeast profiles. We will also embark on some structured homebrew and craftbrew tastings in the near future. Beers will be held up to their corresponding BJCP styles to see how well they may fare against the style guidelines.

We'll also cover our usual club business, and speak about some upcoming events like the 2009 COHO Spring Fling Homebrew Competition, the 2009 KLCC Microbrew Festival and Homebrew Competition, and the 2009 AHA Homebrewers Conference.

COHO will be out at Great Earth Natural Foods in Madras this Saturday morning at 11am. Great Earth Natural Foods is located on the North end of town, across from the Texaco station. Gary, the proprietor, has asked us to clone a beer from the world renown Three Floyds Brewing Company of Indiana. We have found a clone recipe of Alpha King pale ale, and will be recreating this beer in an extract with grains homebrew version. Gary's store has some really good beers, and wonderful food.

COHO's very own Jim Spencer has offered up his estate to any wayward COHO members who may not want to drive back to Bend after a day of brewing. There was talk of a bonfire and some potato cannon action, all with lots of homebrew I'm sure. There is also that disc golf course in Madras if anyone was up for a game.

This has been a fun event that COHO has traveled to the last couple of years, and I don't see this year being any different. Several COHO members have placed in this competition, so it would be nice to continue that trend. The microbrews festival portion of this event is usually very good, with a selection of beers that are seldom seen on this side of the mountains. We typically travel over in a small group and obtain a block of rooms next to each other. There's always the obligatory stops at Cornicopia, Eugene City Brewery, and The Bier Stein. If anyone's interested in attending, please contact me, or another executive officer at your earliest convenience.

For our educational component this month, we'll be giving a brief session about homebrew competitions - how to enter, how to judge, BJCP style guidelines, and how to fill out entry forms. If you're thinking about entering the Spring Fling, or any other competition, please check this out. Hope to see everybody on Wednesday evening.

Cheers!

Greeting fellow fish,

I just wanted to throw out a reminder that we have our monthly group brew coming up next Saturday, April 4th. The brew will be held at Bill Heigh's house (Tallguy) and will start around 10:30AM. Bill has a very cool all grain brew system, so you owe it to yourself to head over and check it out. We'll be brewing McMenamin's original Hammerhead ale recipe as provided to us by Michel Brown up in Portland. There may even be some COHO beer on tap. Hope to see everyone on Saturday.

Cheers!
