blowoff from carboy
Posted January 15th, 2008 by JerryO
I recently had my first blow off experience from my carboy, from a big stout. The blow off foam smells kinda bad, not like rotten eggs, is this normal?

Probably...
Did it blow out an airlock, or did you have a blowoff tube in it? Was anything in the airlock or blowoff container?
What does it smell like? I blow off more often than not, so I am always amazed when people act like it is a rare thing. Maybe everything is fermenting at much cooler temperatures than me(?) Anyway, a few more details may be needed here.
Blow off smell
Hi Tim, this is actually my first blow off experience I usally have plenty of room in my carboy but this time I was close to the top. The wert blew thru the air lock and over the side smelled kinda hoppy at first but later when I went to clean up and sanitize it smelled funky corny . I took a wiff inside and it does smell ok, I think the aged foam gives off a bad aroma.
Wort smell
Yeah, I think you are fine. It will have an extreme smell since (I think) it is very yeasty.
